Can a knight sacrifice everything he holds sacred in service to his king?
King Richard is being held for ransom in Germany, and England is in chaos without a sovereign. The de Granvilles must deliver the treasure that will win their King's freedom.
But the Old Man of the Mountain, leader of the Assassins, is ready to take his revenge on Kamil. To do so he will orchestrate a great betrayal, and his tentacles of treachery reach far and deep. Kamil is determined to prevail―the Old Man must not win. But when all trust has been shattered, who can he turn to for help?
The fate of a king, the bonds of a friendship, and the depth of an enduring love will all be in jeopardy as Will, Ellie, Kamil, and Hosanna face the ultimate loyalty test, and their final battle.

K. M. Grant grew up in Lancashire, England, where she adopted a horse named Miss Muffet when she was 14 years old, a horse who later inspired the character of Hosanna. She and her older sisters used to stay up late devising stories to entertain each other. That, and K. M.’s extraordinary family history (one of her ancestors was the last in England to be drawn and quartered!), fueled her storytelling. She lives in Glascow, Scotland, with her husband and children where she works as a journalist and a broadcaster.Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.:
The Old Man said, "I find myself longing to see a tournament. We have the perfect ingredients, two knights, one Christian and one Saracen. There will be a contest between yourself and the Earl of Ravensgarth and the prize," his eyes were like fireworks, "will of course be the king's ransom. . . . What could be fairer? Each man fighting not just for his life but for his cause?"
Kamil had to speak now. "And Ellie?" He could hardly breathe. Immediately he knew he had made a mistake.
"The girl?" The Old Man held his hands in the air.
Kamil could only nod.
"Oh, I didn't realize she mattered!" The Old Man looked craftily from under his eyelashes. "I know! We'll make her part of the prize. Let's see. If you kill the earl, you can have her to do what you like with. But," he plumped himself back into his cushions, "if the earl kills you, I think perhaps I should take her back to Syria with me. I'm sure I can find a use for her."
