Living in the Nottinghamshire coalfields, the Morel family (a counterpart of Lawrence's own) is beset with conflict. Gertrude, disillusioned with her working-class husband, pours her aspirations into her son, Paul. Tensions develop when Paul falls in love and seeks to escape from his family ties.
