"Is it any wonder I've got
too much blood on my hands? The calls
are coming from inside the house.
I'm sick of my insane demands."
- Michael Robbins, 'Peel Off the Scabs'
". . . The childhood of the dunk
was no childhood at all.
He practiced on a paper route, throwing The Sun
to the same place each morning. Did not sleep long
but when he slept, the springs of his bed imparted
something to him. At night the streetlight floated
down and let him dribble it."
- Patricia Lockwood, 'The Descent of the Dunk'
"if my signal drops it's because i've climbed with them, we're so high now
i can in one single inverted yawn of my eyes full of skin and sex and fury see the whole city i so slowly streetlamp by streetlamp from the other side spent my life seeing in a drowning
"and this one boy here he's doing
he's doing a painting, it's the last day of august, it's a painting of a bed and"
- Timothy Thornton, 'Voicemail for David Hoyle'

Two small, sorbet-coloured paperbacks were the most exciting thing in poetry this year. Reviving the 1960s Penguin Modern Poets series with panache, they united new and established voices from Britain and North America in electric pocketfuls -- Jeremy Noel-Tod * Sunday Times (Poetry Book of the Year) *

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Penguin Modern Poets 2 ? Controlled Explosions (2015) By Michael Robbins, Patricia Lockwood & Timothy Thornton Published by Penguin Books ? ISBN: 9780141983943 Condition: Good (as graded by the ever-charming Crappy Old Books) Crappy Old Books is proud (and slightly alarmed) to present this volatile little paperback: Controlled Explosions . Part of the Penguin Modern Poets revival, this is the second volume in the series, and it?s got more spark, fizz and bang than an unattended box of fireworks in a shed. Three poets, three distinct detonations: Michael Robbins , whose lines are like pop songs rigged with dynamite, bouncing from theology to Transformers in a single stanza. Patricia Lockwood , the high priestess of holy absurdity, whose sentences slither, shimmer, and occasionally bite you on the ankle. Timothy Thornton , precision engineer of words, building structures that smoulder quietly before caving in with satisfying ruin. Together they don?t so much share a book as occupy it like rival demolition experts, each determined to leave the bigger crater in your brain. This 2015 Penguin edition (with its tasteful modernist jacket) is here in Good condition. That means: it?s intact, readable, and unlikely to explode in your hands?though it may leave scorch marks on your imagination. There might be some gentle wear on the cover and the odd crease where a previous reader gasped so hard the spine buckled, but nothing to worry your local bomb squad. So, if you?ve ever wondered what poetry would look like if it were wired to a timer, this is your book. A paperback of combustible charm, offered to you with the kind of reckless enthusiasm only Crappy Old Books could provide. Strap in, light the fuse, and let the poets do the rest.
