Chapter 5: Fashion
Hair – Where do I want to be?
Once you decide you want to make a hairstyle change, it's time to seek a bit of advice (if you have a teenaged daughter as I do, likely you are getting lots of advice already):
Once you've selected a style, make sure your hairstylist agrees that your hair type can perform in the style you want. For example, a woman with thin and straight, wispy hair will not be able to get her hair to look full and wavy easily. And if you have thick, curly hair, you will have to spend a fair bit of time with a round brush and blow dryer if you want a straight style. It's easier and quicker in the long run if you select a style your hair will naturally adapt to. Ask your hairstylist to teach you how to style your new look at home.
If you plan to change or add colour, make sure you understand what will be involved in maintaining it. If colouring means frequent trips to the salon that you don't have time for or can’t afford, rethink your options. Maybe you can manage the colour with an at-home product, or maybe there's a lower maintenance alternative. Other things to consider before colouring your hair are whether you'll need to use a gentler shampoo designed specially for colour-treated hair and whether you'll need to keep your hair out of the sun to prevent the colour from changing or fading quickly.
