"Lewis gives us permission to admit our own doubts, our own angers and anguishes, and to know that they are part of the soul's growth."--Madeleine L'Engle All but two of the essays here first appeared in newspapers and magazines, and although their subjects are wide ranging, they all share an infusion of C.S. Lewis's characteristic sanity and persuasiveness. In those essays written between 1940 and 1945, Lewis reflects on questions generated by the war: Democratic values, the need for updated chivalry, and the cynicism of the modern soldier. Other essays examine the threats to educational and spiritual fulfillment, the prolems of literary censorship, and the very survival of humanity as we know it. C. S. Lewis (1898-1963) gained international renown for an impressive array of beloved works both popular and scholarly: literary criticism, children's literature, fantasy literature, and numerous books on theology. Among his most celebrated achievements are Out of the Silent Planet, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Screwtape Letters, The Four Loves, and Surprised by Joy.About the Author:
