A grandson and his grandfather spend the day wondering about the world and end their musings with a wish on the first star as it appears in the evening sky.

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-- Using delicate pastel colors, Alexander creates a gentle, loving world in which a grandfather and his granddaughter stroll through the green pastures of rural America. She explores the child's view of ``forever,'' from the mountains to the stream, from the flowers and the birds to the stars in the sky. Grandpa, repeating the endearment ``little one,'' gives patient, simple answers to each of the child's questions about her surroundings. As the day fades to twilight, the girl makes a wish on the first star and imagines that she flys to the sky; after placing a flower on the moon, she returns to the arms of her grandfather. This is a sweet story with soft, somewhat nostalgic illustrations that hearken back to a time when the world allowed for such innocent contemplation. --Martha Topol, Northwestern Michigan College, Traverse City, MI

From Publishers Weekly:

In evening's easy, suspended time a youngster and grandfather serenely explore basic themes both large and small. The ingenuous questions are real: "Where does the sky end?"; "Where is forever?" And Grandpa answers by giving the child profound experiences with few words. Hand in hand they climb to a treetop and wonder if a bird could "fly to forever." Themes of never-ending matters and cyclical occurrences fill the practically plotless story: windblown seeds take root to grow new plants; small streams gather to the sea; sunrise and sunset. Alexander's muted watercolor, pastel and pencil illustrations reflect the otherworldly quality of evening light and gravitate easily from reality to fantasy when the child wishes on the first star. Ages 4-8.
