â Compassionate understanding and humor illuminate this understated yet dazzling workâ (Publishers Weekly)-a compelling parable in which two sisters find, among the neglected virtues of the past, a sustenance to carry them into the future. â A fine, unnerving little hermeneutic of loveâ (Village Voice).

About the Author:

Lawrence Naumoff is the author of six novels and lots of stories. He’s won a Whiting Award, a National Endowment for the Arts Discovery Award, a Thomas Wolfe fiction award, and the Walter Raleigh prize for the best work of fiction in North Carolina for the year 2005. His books have been published in Finland, England, Spain, Holland, and Germany, and he teaches creative writing at UNC in Chapel Hill.

From Kirkus Reviews:

Naumoff is an interesting combination: a progressive champion of women's rights and a conservative wedded to the land and fearful of development. In his appealing fourth novel about two sisters, he affirms the values of a matriarchal family. In an earlier century, in North Carolina, a woman was tricked into leaving her husband for another man, only to reap humiliation and disgrace. Her daughter built a farmhouse with her own money and stipulated that only the women in the family could inherit the property. Its contemporary owners are Natalie and Frannie, sisters in their 20s. Their father split when they were children; their mother has just died. The sisters love each other, though they are temperamental opposites. Older sister Natalie is level-headed, with a steady if priggish boyfriend (Jake) whom she loves dearly. Frannie is wild and lost, a party girl so busy bed-hopping that she missed her mother's funeral, a lapse that now shames her. She was her father's confidante and has never recovered from his disappearance. The last straw comes when Jake, who understands money, urges the sale of the farmhouse, and Natalie backs him up. Frannie resists furiously; this is her sanctuary. She regroups, taking a job at the mill where Natalie works and staying home nights. The excitement in Naumoff's story comes from watching his endearing heroine, a funny-sad clown, fighting for the farmhouse (and her life) and slowly turning the tide. Considerably better than the over-emphatic Taller Women (1992). Now a wittier moralist with a stronger story, Naumoff has his one unreconstructed chauvinist pig bested by a real pig, Frannie's pet sow, while keeping the spotlight on Frannie's moving transformation from a waif into a woman. -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. Book Description Harcourt Children s Books, United Kingdom, 1995. Paperback. Condition: New. Harvest.. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. The old house in Silk Hope was meant never to be sold but to be inherited by the daughters of the line. When their mother dies, it is left to Frannie and Natalie to decide what the house means for them as vigorous, independent modern women - especially for irresponsible, irreverent, freewheeling Frannie, whose wild escapades hide a deep sadness. Attracted to bad men and tall tales, Frannie has always seen herself as an escape artist in a treacherous world - a world where women, once punished for being too free, are now expected always to say yes, that brave and kind word.supposed to make up for all the wrong in the history of mankind. With eloquence and compassion and humor, Lawrence Naumoff tells the story of the resilient bond between these sisters and of Frannie s search for her father, her love for a stoic, one-armed man, her trouble with heartless and humorless authorities - and, finally, her awakening to the desire to lead a good life, removed from a culture that seems to have replaced honor and dignity and virtue with greed and power and desperation. Silk Hope, NC is a buoyant and moving parable in which two good women find, among the hidden, forgotten virtues of the past, a sustenance to carry them into the future.
