This is the official United States Air Force history of the Korean War—the record of the air war as it really was. Begun in 1950, almost at the outbreak of hostilities, it chronicles accomplishments and failures, events heroic and unpleasant, the whole multitude of incidents that made up the vital contribution of the Air Force to the conflict.
THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE IN KOREA is more than a thorough history of a particular military branch in a particular conflict: it is a detailed study of the staggering complexities of modern warfare and a sobering restatement of the continuing global struggle.
Air superiority was the key to survival and success for U.N. forces in the Korean War, and this history analyzes the means of achieving and maintaining that superiority. The military, logistical, and political problems are clearly presented. The varying phases of the air war which led, eventually, to an air strategy are detailed: operations which gained and maintained U.N. control of the air, those which reduced Communist war potential, those which destroyed or immobilized enemy forces already in being, and those supporting ground troops in battle—all simultaneous actions, yet each designed to produce a different effect on the enemy.
Although THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE IN KOREA is primarily a history of institutions at war, the author has recognized that all institutions are made by the men who compose them. Therefore, he freely records personal exploits, made in the early days of the conflict when brave men fought with limited equipment but unlimited courage. He has skillfully manipulated a mountain of factual material and made it a highly readable, interweaving his own perceptive and penetrating observations on military and political matters throughout the narrative.
