This third edition of the Oxford Textbook of Psychiatry has been revised extensively to take account of new knowledge and advances in practice reported since the publication of the second edition. It has been revised and reorganized to incorporate the latest revisions of the International
Classification of Diseases (ICD10) and of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSMIV). The most significantly altered sections of the book are Chapter 6, which is now concerned with stress-related and adjustment disorders, Chapter 17, on drugs and other physical treatments,
Chapter 18, on psychological treatments, and Chapter 19, in which the account of psychiatric services has been revised extensively. Elsewhere , necessary changes have been made to bring the book up to date while preserving the original clinical descriptions.

About the Author:
Michael Gelder, Professor of Psychiatry, University of Oxford. Richard Mayou, both Clinical Readers in Psychiatry, University of Oxford.
Review:
'This expanded, revised and up-to-date version of teh Oxford textbook of Psychiatry is a splendid choice for its intended audience of medical students and psychiatric residents. Written in a clear and direct style, it presents a balanced and authoritative account of modern clinical practice.
Because its chapters on diagnosis and classification take DSMIIR criteria into account, it si sutiable for American use. I commned it highly.@ Leon Eisenberg, M.D. Harvard Medical School

` The format of the book with clear headings and subheadings makes for easy reference... It will undoubtedly be useful to the trainee psychiatrist early in his or her career and later during revision for professional examinations. But it will also be read with profit by all medical
practitioners who are interested in keeping their knowledge of mental illness and its management up to date.'
The Lancet

` I have reviewed the second edition of the Oxford Textbook of Psychiatry and find it superb. It is a well written, up to date and topical textbook of psychiatry that assimilates contemporary scientific knowledge in relationship to our psychiatric capacities to diagnose, prognosticate and
treat. It is authoritative, scholarly, and profound. I shall recommend it highly to students, teachers, and practitioners alike.'
Paul R. McHugh, M.D. The John Hopkins Medical Institutes

` Provides a well documented introduction to all of the major clinical topics and sufficient references to the basic sciences to satisfy the inquiring mind.' British Medical Journal

`It is the most up-to-date book in the market. It is very readable and is lucid in style and clear in its explanations. It is invaluable for trainees preparing for post graduate qualifications in psychiatry.'
Saudi Medical Journal

`This second edition has earned the justifiable reputation of being the standard comprehensive textbook of general psychiatry for psychiatric trainees. It remains a thoroughly lucid and comprehensive general textbook. This new edition will undoubtedly rank high in the list of essential
reading for postgraduate trainees in psychiatry. Highly recommended.
British Journal of Hospital Medicine

`A crisply written, compact, consistent, and thoughtful introduction to the field.

I recommend its use as the basic textbook for medical students with a serious interest in psychiatry and for psychiatry residents in the first two years of training. More experienced psychiatrists will also find it a helpful resource.'
New England Journal of Medicine

`...provides a rational, comprehensive, multi-faceted view of child psychiatry from a developmental perspective and constitutes a unique contribution to the literature. The amount of useful practical knowledge packed into this volume is remarkable, but with the author's literary skills it
makes for easy reading. It is a model of order, clarity and balance in relation to the various disorders presented within the developmental framework. It is destined to becomes a standard text which will find its way into widespread use and will not merely be a book on a shelf which remains
unopened. It is to be recommended without reservation.'
Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry

` The authors have succeeded admirably in the formidable task of instilling virtually the whole of clinical psychiatry into just over 1000 pages. The text is clearly written, effortless to read and is replete with essential information'
International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry

'The popularity of Gelder, Gath and Mayou's Oxford Textbook of Psychiatry is demonstrated by its having been reprinted four times in the five years following first publication.'
