Book Description Oxford University Press, London, 1970. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. The interior of the book is crisp and clean. There is a former owner's name on the front free end paper, but no other marks or wear. The beige covers are fresh, with minor wear at edges and corners. The dust jacket is not price-clipped, and shows light wear only. It was issued in a protective plastic cover, which had shrunk slightly. This has now been removed, leaving two lines of adhesive on the back which fortunately are not visible at all on the front. The jacket is now in a new mylar cover and looks very attractive. Synopsis: Based on reminiscences of her aunt, Frances Hermione de Poloratzky , a very successful writer, Almedingen describes the life of a bright, privileged little girl growing up on her father's great country estate in Czarist Russia. It describes the great and small incidents of her life up to her first literary triumph at the age of 14, including the comings and goings of servants and governesses, visits to family on other great estates, a Christening feast and a Russian Christmas, and the effects of the Crimean War on her English-born mother. Fanny's father lost his money, and the family left Russia for France and England, but Fanny always remembered the estate as a paradise of peace and beauty. Bookseller Inventory # 003928
