Stephen Elboz was awarded the Smarties Young Judges' Prize for his first published novel, The House of Rats. From School Library Journal:
Gr 4-6-Based on the book by Stephen Elboz (Oxford Univ. Pr., 1998), this audio presentation is an enjoyable introduction to fantasy. Temmi lives in a peaceful village and has become trusted by the flying white bears that inhabit the area. When the Witch-Queen's brutish soldiers arrive intent on capturing one of the flying bears to amuse the girl destined to become the new queen, Temmi becomes involved in a great adventure. The bear cub Cush, Temmi's favorite, is captured, as is Temmi when he attempts a rescue. Eventually retained by the soldiers to care for the injured cub, Temmi becomes a resident of the Ice Castle where meat is eaten raw and any warmth is forbidden. The young queen-elect also keeps dwarves as amusements, and Temmi finds them disagreeable but potential allies in an escape plan. Actor Michael Maloney has a slight British accent as he expertly reads this magical tale. Though Cush's mother is violently killed and terrifying wolves are beaten to obey the Witch-Queen's henchmen, this succinct presentation will satisfy those who cannot quite manage longer offerings.-Fritz Mitnick, Shaler North Hills Library, Glenshaw, PA
