About the Author:

Brian Wildsmith is one of the most venerable figures in children's illustration today and celebrates over forty years of publishing with OUP - a truly remarkable achievement.

From Kirkus Reviews:

Wildsmith (Amazing World of Words, 1996, etc.) shares the familiar Grimms tale of the donkey, dog, rooster, and cat discarded by their owners because they are too old to work, who set off for Bremen Town to become musicians. Along the way, they discover a hideout for robbers and, working together, scare the robbers away. Then the four old friends settle down to enjoy their remaining years in comfort and ease. Wildsmith is true to the Grimms telling, though at times he sweetens the harsh tale; for example, this donkey is not about to be sent to the knackers, he is only going to be sold. Wildsmiths lovely colors also soften the rough edges as each page is filled with lavenders, pinks, soft greens, and blues. In addition to the main characters he has filled many scenes with delicately drawn, but brightly lit flowers, birds, moths, and butterflies. Many other versions of the story remain in print, each with its own merits; this one will be a welcome addition by a favorite illustrator. (Folklore. 4-6) -- Copyright ©2000, Kirkus Associates, LP.
