Elements of Mind provides a unique introduction to the main problems and debates in contemporary philosophy of mind. Author Tim Crane opposes those currently popular conceptions of the mind that divide mental phenomena into two very different kinds (the intentional and the qualitative) and proposes instead a challenging and unified theory of all the phenomena of mind. In light of this theory, Crane engages students with the central problems of the philosophy of mind--the mind-body problem, the problem of intentionality (or mental representation), the problem of consciousness, and the problem of perception--and attempts to find solutions to these problems. A fresh and engaging exploration of the main issues in the philosophy of mind, Elements of Mind is easily accessible to students with no background in the subject.

Review:

`This is by far the best account I know of what intentionality is, and why it is central to the philosophy of mind - highly recommended.'
Huw Price, Edinburgh University

`Tim Cranes' Elements of Mind is an outstandingly good introduction to the crucial philosophical project of elucidating our everyday, non-scientific self-conception. Combining exemplary clarity with richness and depth of argumentation, it explores and explains the mental phenomena of
intentionality, consciousness, thought, and perception, as well as the relationship between the mind and the physical world ... Elements of Mind is a really excellent book. Crane has chosen his starting point, his approach and his range of topics well and maintains the clarity of exposition that is
so crucial for an introductory book. With this he combines richness of insight, depth of argument, and genuine originality, ensuring that Elements of Mind will repay the attention of every reader, whether beginner or expert.'
Martin Davies, Professor of Philosophy, Australian National University

Book Description Oxford University Press, United Kingdom, 2001. Paperback. Condition: New. New. Language: English . Brand New Book. This accessible and lively introduction considers the main problems and debates in contemporary philosophy of mind. The central theme of the book is that intentionality, or the mind s direction upon its objects - sometimes described as the mind s power to represent or be about things - is the essential feature of all mental phenomena. Crane engages in a subsidiary theme, the mind-body problem, asking to what extent a physicalist reductive account of mental phenomena is possible, or even necessary. Proposing an original and unified theory of all the phenomena of mind, Crane opposes those currently popular conceptions of the mind which divide mental phenomena into two very different kinds, the intentional and the qualitative. In the light of his theory, Crane gives an account of the main problems of the philosophy of mind: the mind-body problem, the problem of intentionality (or mental representation), the problem of consciousness, and the problem of perception. He also attempts to give solutions to these problems. This book provides an fresh and engaging exploration of those questions at the centre of the philosophy of mind in an accessible and lucid style which will appeal to all students, including those new to the subject.
