Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Cloth hardcover, xii + 158pp + 8 pages of b&w plates. Foreign university ownership markings (stamps, pencil and pen numbers) on the reverse of title-page and rear blank endpaper; a label on the back of the dust jacket and on the rear board. Age-yellowed and dust-toned dust jacket shows edge-tears, small areas of loss, frayed spine ends, faint grubby marks. -- During the second half of the 16th century the tremendous interest in travel, discovery and foreign trade which grew in England, led to the publication of a large number of scientific and popular works of a geographical nature. The travellers recorded what facts they knew, and filled in the gaps from classical legends and from their own imaginations. By this process knowledge of the Continent and peoples of Africa spread, a knowledge whose extent has been greatly underestimated by modern critics. The dramatists were not slow to realize the value of the 'new' continent as a source of spectacle, plot, character and imagery. The present study examines the background of knowledge available to playwrights through works published during the 16th and early 17th centuries, and the use they made of such knowledge in their plays. -- Contents: Preface; List of Plates; 1. African Image in 16th-Century England 2. Africa in English Masque and Pageantry 3.
