Synopsis
This new edition builds on the established strengths and reputation of the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (wide lexical coverage, an abundance of useful examples, and detailed information on grammar and usage) while making it more authoritative and easy to use. The British National Corpus of spoken, written, British and American English has been used to ensure full accurate coverage of today's vocabulary and usage. A new simple defining style, restricted to a carefully chosen vocabulary of 3,500 common words, makes the dictionary much easier to use, and more accessible to intermediate level students. 16 language study pages help students understand more clearly how the English language works and how to use the dictionary more effectively. 16 full-colour pages (including 8 pages of maps) provide vividly presented cultural information on topics such as British and American constitutions and legal systems, and the Commonwealth. Over 200 notes on usage, most of them revised, cover aspects of grammar and meaning known to cause difficulties to students.

Jonathan Crowther, now retired, worked as a managing editor in the Dictionaries Department of the English Language Teaching Division of Oxford University Press. Jonathan is a professional crossword compiler and also the author of several graded crossword books for learners of English.
