About the Author:

Thomas E. Skidmore is Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Professor of Modern Latin American History at Brown University. His previous books include Politics in Brazil, 1930-1964 and Politics of Military Rule in Brazil, 1964-1985, both published by Oxford; he was also an editor of The Cambridge Encyclopaedia of Latin America.
