About the Author:

Gregg Camfield is a Professor of English at the University of the Pacific. He is the author of Sentimental Twain.

From Booklist:

The scope of this resource is broad. Arranged alphabetically, entries cover writings, major characters, individuals, organizations, and a large number of general topics affiliated in some way with Samuel Clemens, or Mark Twain. Topical entry headings include Cit ies, Death, Food, Science, Sex and sexuality, and many others. A handful of "feature essays" are the contributions of noted scholars or well-known writers, such as Nat Hentoff on Censorship and Arthur Miller on Performance. More than 40 black-and-white illustrations depict items such as Clemens' pilot certificate and political cartoons.

Lengths of entries range from a single paragraph to several pages, often providing detailed descriptions and criticisms. Many articles contain material derived from primary sources such as letters and speeches. For example, the article Work habits includes quotes from five letters, an excerpt from Clemens' autobiography, and two sentences from one of his notebooks. Entries for writings avoid chapter-by-chapter summaries and instead follow Clemens' writing process mixed with a discussion of themes and meanings. The inclusion of down-to-earth practicalities such as volumes sold provides an added perspective.

The tone of this resource is scholarly yet entertaining. Numerous cross-references provide easy access to related articles. Occasional complex terminology will challenge some high-school students and adults. A thematic list of entries, bibliography, index, and chronology of Clemens' works are also included.

There is some duplication with Mark Twain A to Z: The Essential Reference to His Life and Writings (Facts On File, 1995), which has nearly 1,300 entries and more than 130 illustrations. Another similar resource is The Mark Twain Encyclopedia (Garland, 1993). However, the high use of primary sources as well as broad topics makes The Oxford Companion to Mark Twain a nice addition, suitable for both public and academic libraries. RBB
