Providing an introduction to English syntax and grammar, this text is written from a discourse-functional perpsective. The author's goal is to ensure that students who have little background in syntax will learn the basics as well as a comprehensive view of English grammar. The primary audience will be beginning graduate students and upper level undergraduates in linguistics courses such as Introduction to Syntax and Introduction to English Structure, as well as in TESOL/ESL programs and English departments.

Lynn M. Berk, Professor of Linguistics, Florida International University.Review:
"[A] descriptive survey of English syntax which appeals to both novice and scholar. Lynn Berk has succeeded in making an important pedagogical contribution for TESOL programs and for students of linguistics and English grammar....Berk's approach makes the book very accessible and useful to students in an introductory course on English syntax. The book also serves as a resource for an English as a second language instructor as well as for an advanced second-language learner of English."--Mayrene Bentley in Linguist List
