The poet's friends in Bohemia, including Sir Richard Burton, Burne~Jones and others, figure prominently, as do more orthodox companions such as the Trevelyans and Theodore Watts~Dunton. Swinburne, poet of revolution and notorious rebel against Victorian propriety, was nevertheless a child of his time. Born in 1837, he was educated at Eton during its transformation into an Arnoldian public school and later at Balliol, where he became a close associate of the Pre~Raphaelite circle. Like many of his contemporaries, he was fascinated by the explicit erotica of such books as Gautier's Mademoiselle de Maupin and Baudelaire's Fleurs du Mal, becoming in the 1860s a devout admirer of the Marquis de Sade. Yet, more obviously than Rossetti or Morris, Swinburne was the figurehead of modernity in poetry and morals. He was in the vanguard of the "art for art's sake" movement and, eschewing the Tennysonian didacticism of recent years, shocked the reading public with his vigorous, colourful and, above all, frankly sensual verse. As a literary personality Swinburne was the visible and striking symbol of the new order, conspicuous in appearance and behaviour, and a favourite butt of newspaper caricaturists. Donald Thomas's study offers a new critical discussion of Swinburne's major poems and an assessment of their influence on the development of English literature. He succeeds in drawing an absorbing and lively picture not only of Swinburne the poet, but also of the man, and of the world in which he lived. Seller Inventory # 12201102
