9780195310368: The Encyclopedia of Social Work (4 Volume Set)

Oxford University Press and The National Association of Social Workers are proud to announce that 2009's completely updated, revised and critically-acclaimed 20th edition of this essential work is now available in paperback. The 400 articles in this four-volume set cover all aspects of social work. Topics include practice and interventions, social environments, social conditions and challenges, and social policy and history.

This new edition of the Encyclopedia contains extensive coverage of areas that have come to the fore since the 1995 publication of the 19th edition, including demographic changes from immigration, technology, the implications of managed care, faith-based assistance, evidence-based practice, gerontology, and trauma and disaster. Each thoughtful article is written and signed by a top academic or social work practitioner and includes a bibliography for further reading. Comprehensive and easy to use, all volumes are fully cross-referenced and include a complete index.

From Booklist:

Context and conditions have dramatically changed since the nineteenth edition of this classic reference source was published in 1995. The twentieth edition, for which the National Association of Social Workers partnered with Oxford, promises to be, yet again, an indispensable reference for students, scholars, practitioners, and policymakers. This edition is distinguished by its comprehensive scope and consistently high-quality coverage of the breadth, depth, and diversity of the profession. Though written primarily for a professional audience, the scholarly articles are easily understandable. Contributors were asked to pay attention to historical foundations, contemporary issues and practice dimensions, multicultural perspectives, the latest theoretical foundations and research findings, and emerging trends and directions, and readers interested in any of these components of a topic will not be disappointed. Those interested in the impact of other disciplines, such as criminal justice, psychology, or management; in the latest and best interventions, methodologies, and techniques; and in the ethical issues, challenges, and debates related to a particular topic will also be well served. As explained in the introduction, the twentieth edition has evolved in numerous ways. The number of volumes has increased from three to four, and the number of entries from 290 to almost 400. There is more coverage of multicultural and faith-based topics and research technologies, to name a few areas that have been expanded. Also covered are new areas of practice, such as Forensic social work and Trauma. International coverage was also increased, although it should be noted that the encyclopedia is a U.S.-based undertaking, and readers needing in-depth information about the international community will want to continue their research elsewhere. The nearly 400 signed and alphabetically arranged entries are followed by almost 200 biographies of pioneers in the field. Selective bibliographies at the end of each article often include references, further-reading lists, and suggested links. Cross-references, a topical outline at the end of volume 4, and a comprehensive index not only add value to the work but also make it consistently easy to use. Academic and large public libraries owning the nineteenth edition or its two supplements, (published in 1997 and 2003) will want to invest in the twentieth. Unequaled and without competition, it will quickly become the foundation of any social-work collection. Also available as an e-book. --Sarah Watstein
