If your child has Tourette Syndrome (TS), or any other chronic motor or vocal tic disorder, you know how important it is to get the best treatment available. Behavior therapy, as described in this workbook, is a treatment for tic disorders that is scientifically proven to help sufferers of TS manage their symptoms.

This 11-session program involves helping your child become aware of his tics and the situations that make them worse. In conjunction with visits to a qualified mental health professional, your family will learn to restructure your child's environment so tics occur less frequently. With your help, your child will create a list of tics to be addressed during treatment. Each week a new tic will be targeted and your child will be taught specific exercises for managing that tic. The program also includes relaxation techniques designed to help your child combat anxiety and stress. Relapse prevention strategies will help your family maintain progress and keep your child motivated long after treatment has ended.

Complete with psychoeducational information, as well as child-friendly forms and worksheets, this workbook will help your family better understand TS and the ways you can effectively support your child. The goal of this program is not to cure the tic disorder, but to teach your child skills for managing tics well into the future.

Book Description Oxford University Press Inc, United States, 2008. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. In 2002, the Tourette Syndrome Association formed the TS Behavioral Sciences Consortium (BSC). The charge of the BSC was to develop and test nonpharmacological treatment options for individuals, both children and adults with Tourette Syndrome. This manual is the result of their work, and represents the most scientifically effective behavioral treatment for Tourette Syndrome available today. The treatment program uses Habit Reversal Training (HRT) for children and adults with chronic tic disorder. Individual treatment is based at its core on awareness training, the development of a specific competing response for each tic, and the use of functionally-based strategies for the elimination of tic-exacerbating antecedent and consequent variables. In addition, individual treatment includes techniques designed to enhance patient compliance, including social support and an inconvenience review, as well as scheduled time for the therapist and client to discuss areas of functioning that individuals with TS may find difficult, such as social/familial difficulties and disruptive/anger/rage behavior. Each week, clients are given homework assignments, to be done 4-5 times per week, consisting of 20 to 30 minutes of awareness and competing response training to tics addressed in session. The client will be encouraged to keep tally marks to monitor tic behavior. Home-based monitoring and competing response training are reviewed at each session. All homework assignments will be available in the companion workbook. Seller Inventory # AAV9780195341294
