Book Description Oxford University Press, Melbourne, 1981. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. With publishers complimentary copy stamp on front free endpaper, A fine copy in fine dustjacket. From the first years of the squatters' invasion of the country of the Kamilaroi people on the Liverpool Plains of New South Wales, to the end of the northward pastoral advance on the Plains of Promise south of the Gulf of Carpentaria, Judith Wright's forbears were involved in the great and almost unchronicled pastoral migrations by which eastern Australia was first taken over by white men. In her earlier book, The Generations of Men, she told herfamily story in semi-novelized form, basing it on family documents. She has now returned to those documents, in particular the diaries left by her grandfather, collated them with many other documents and records and with later historical and ecological work, and set the story in the wider context of the pastoral history of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The new book follows much more closely the effect of the pastoral invasion on the Aborigines during those Black Wars, in which, as she wrote earlier, 'many bodies marked the tracks' of those great mobs of sheep and cattle which went out to the new country, and 'an unwritten law made men keep silence' on such happenings.' The book also adds further documentation on the deterioration of pastures and the change in forest cover and water-courses which followed the arrival of those hard-hoofed animals in country never before heavily grazed. With its glimpses of the events surrounding the notorious Native Police of Queensland, the Aboriginal retaliation at Cullin-la-Ringo and its fatal consequences, and the figures of the young pastoralists who variously encouraged, or bravely resisted, the Native Police massacres, the book throws new light on our past. As the bicentenary of white Australia draws closer, the necessary reassessment of our history will be aided by such objective but personally-focused accounts of particular aspects, and of happenings which influence our lives and their conditions even to the present day. (Jacket Blurb) ; 225 x 150mm; [vi], 303 pages. Bookseller Inventory # 20888
