Book Description OUP (Melbourne), 1983. Hardcover / Hardback. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First edition. Hardback. A study of the gang of anarchists, led by the mysterious figure of 'Peter the Painter', who caused havoc in England at the turn of the 20th century before a fatal gun-battle with the police left them dead, dying or on the run - some to Australia. In a vivid piece of reconstruction the author describes the impact of the gang on England and Australia, two rather staid Anglo-Saxon communities on opposite sides of the globe. Dedicated to the overthrow of the tsarist regime in their Baltic homelands, the fanatics were also out to destroy what they saw as exploitative capitalist societies where they came across them. Under the leadership of Peter the Painter and other Latvian revolutionaries, the gang proceeded to engage in a series of spectacular and violent crimes which had a profound effect upon the society of their unwilling hosts. When the group finally broke up and fled abroad some sought to settle in Australia where their presence brought about a major revision in Australian immigration policies. Throughout all these events the dominating character, Peter the Painter, remained an enigma. Russian police spy and agent provocateur or revolutionary patriot par excellence, he so imposed his personality on the community as to become something of a criminal folk hero in the mould of Robin Hood or even Jack the Ripper. Who was he really? What happened to him? The author offers some intriguing answers - and questions. Illus., Rogues' Gallery, Select Bibliog. and Index. 131pp. 8vo. h/back. From the library of true-crime writer, Wilfred Gregg, with his personal b/plate. Nr. F. in nr. f. dw. Seller Inventory # 13895
