From First Fleet journal extracts to recent fiction by Shirley Hazzard and David Malouf, this anthology represents the best and most significant Australian prose and poetry of the past two centuries. Four chronologically arranged sections, linked by commentaries, reveal themes and preoccupations and demonstrate the continuity of attitudes that characterize the Australian literary achievement.

This volume surveys Australian poetry and prose from the end of the 18th century to the present. It is intended to represent its range and to document its continuity. It contains samples from early writers such as Henry Lawson and Henry Handel Richardson (Ethel F. Robertson) to modern writers more familiar to Americans, such as Shirley Hazzard and David Malouf. The anthology is divided into four sections, each preceded by a short commentary. The works are presented chronologically within the sections and include biographical data about the writer. There is an index of titles and authors. No other critical apparatus is provided. This volume will be most useful when accompanied on the shelf by the Oxford History of Australian Literature. Recommended for large literature collections. Michael J. Esposito, formerly with the Special Libraries Association, New York
