This biography traces the life and works of a remarkable director and actor. During his brief thirteen year career, Guru Dutt replaced the repetitive ingredients of formulaic Hindi cinema with an individual and lyrical vision, playing his screen characters with a sensitivity and compassion that endowed them with a rare depth. Nasreen Munni Kabir traces the life of this unusual man through accounts of his films and a series of interviews with his family, colleagues, and friends.

`OUP must be lauded for its remarkable contribution towards providing an authentic record of history of Indian cinema. Early last year it published an Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema, a monumental work of exceptional scholarship and research, which deftly filled a yawning gap in Indian publishing. And now comes a long overdue biography of Guru Dutt. Kabir's research is impeccable and she succeeds in drawing a portrait of an extraordinarily talented film-maker ... From the wealth of material that she gathered, Kabir succeeds in creating a document that sketches the life of a restless creative talent.' India Mail
