9780195665314: Hinduism and Its Sense of History

It has been long taken for granted in the study of Hinduism over the past two centuries that the Hindus lacked a sense of history. This book marshalls evidence to render this assumption, which has had far-reaching consequences, implausible.

Book Description Oxford University Press, New Delhi, India, 2003. Hard Cover. Book Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. First Edition. It is virtually an axiom in the study of Hindu religion and culture that the Hindus lived in a mythic universe and lacked a sense of history. This book, which is in four parts, examines this proposition in detail. The book begins by considering the emergence of the axiom itself, and goes on to explore the pervasive role this axiom has played in virtually all fields of Indian studies, from historiography to literature studies. The author then catalogues and examines the various responses this alleged absence of a historcal sense on the part of the Hindus has evoked. He concludes, however, that despite its pervasiveness, the assumption cannot be sustained in the light of historical evidence, and contends that the proposition that the Hindus lacked a sense of history is misleading in the extreme and should be abandoned. Convincingly argued, eminently readable, and bearing Sharma's signature style, this compact study will attract scholars and students of Indian religions, compa rative religion, Indian history, and Indic civilization, as well as general readers interested in Hinduism. Printed Pages: 142. Size: 15 Cms x 23 Cms. Bookseller Inventory # 010030
