Shortly after Hong Kong fell to the Japanese in 1941, Colonel Lindsay Ride and a group of companions escaped from Shamshuipo prison camp and made their way to Free China. The War Office approved their setting up of an organisation to help prisoners of war, internees and escapees. Thus BAAG was born and it soon became the chief source of intelligence for the Allies fighting in Southern China. Besides helping to liberate about 2,000 people from Japanese captivity, it carried out the humanitarian work of smuggling into Hong Kong, drugs, food and messages of hope.
