Book Description Auckland University Press/Oxford University Press, Auckland, 1975. Hard Cover. Book Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG. Photos, Maori Drawing Reproductions (illustrator). 1st. This study of the Hauhau (Pai Marire) movement is described as the first to portray this Maori religious group of the 1860s as being in search of ways of meeting European settlement and domination on Maori terms without compromising their identity. This contrasted with earlier writings on the Hauhau which mainly showed them as bloodthirsty fanatics, to the extent that this became the popular concept --- one that remains widely held. In his preface the author says the book is an attempt at a new, more positive approach to Pai Marire, one that emphasised its adaptive qualities and efforts to come to terms with European settlement and "not to drive all Pakahas from New Zealand." He also states that his research on the topic resulted in "a very different explanation of the nature and significance of Pai Marire" aimed at regulating the process of cultural change for the benefit of Maori. This has become a acarce book. Jointly published by the Auckland and Oxford universities in 1975, first edition, 186 pages including two appendices, abbreviations list, glossary, bibliiography, source notes and index.
