Part of the complete reissue of "The Oxford History of English Literature", this volume covers both famous and lesser known authors of the English Restoration. The author is particularly keen to highlight the work of authors whom he feels have been largely neglected by literary criticism. Hence he covers dramatists such as Shadwell, Lee, Otway and Southerne and authors such as John Banks, Mrs Behn, Crowne, Durfey and Ravenscroft. The book also looks at Restoration preachers, historians, biographers, essayists, poets and eccentrics such as John Aubrey and Walter Pope. Despite the book's clear literary bias, it does not ignore men of science, politics and economics. Of particular interest during the Restoration period is the development of literary criticism in its very early stages, and the author examines the implications of this development for literature as a whole.

Hardcover. Condition: Gut. Reprint (1990). 589 p. Schutzumschlag etwas berieben und Seiten altersbedingt gegilbt, sonst gutes Exemplar, ohne Anstreichungen/Dust jacket a bit rubbed and pages yellowed due to age, otherwise good copy, without annotations. - This volume deals with what is often called the age of Dryden. Dryden, as the greatest poet and critic of the Restoration period and one of its leading dramatists, has been given fuller treatment here than any other writer. But this was also the age of Bunyan, of Halifax and Locke, of Boyle and Newton. And the period is unusually rich in writers just short of the highest rank the dramatists Etherege, Shadwell, Wycherley, Otway, Lee, and Congreve; the preachers Barrow, South, and Tillotson; the historians Clarendon and Burnet; Samuel Butler, Charles Cotton and Rochester among the poets; and miscellaneous writers like Evelyn and Pepys, Aubrey, Cowley and Sir William Temple. The three longest chapters- -two on the drama and one on religion will show where the main emphasis of this curiously divided period really fell; but due weight is given to the historians and biographers, the essayists and journalists, the men of science, the poets, the politicians, the writers of fiction, and lastly in this critical and controversial age the critics.
