Stars and Masculinities in Spanish Cinema focuses on the careers of ten contemporary Spanish film stars, including Antonio Banderas, Javier Bardem, and Eduardo Noriega. Until his appointment to a Chair in the Department of Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American Studies in 1995, Chris Perriam was Lecturer in Spanish at the University of Durham. His publications include Desire and Dissent: An Introduction to Luis Antonio de Villena (Berg 1995) and he is a co-editor of A New History of Spanish Writing: 1939 to the 1990s (OUP 2000).
Perriam is able to juggle films from chapter to chapter without ever allowing the material to appear jaded or repetitive. * Modern Language Review * ... a critically informed, beautifully written, lucid account of each actor's oeuvre ... Throughout, the author provides meticulous analysis of films that have, in some cases, been extensively treated elsewhere. What distinguishes Perriam's approach is the fact that the analysis is always grounded in a complex mapping of the stars' on-screen identities and their intersections with off-screen personas, socio-economic factors, and the cultural climate of post-Franco Spain ... ground-breaking ... impeccable scholarship ... exemplary work. * Modern Language Review *
