Synopsis
Despite Charlotte Brontė's entreaty to her lifelong friend Ellen Nussey to burn her correspondence, very little seems to have been destroyed, and in this fully annotated edition, based as far as possible on original manuscripts, many confidential and outspoken letters are published in full for the first time. As well as Charlotte's own letters from 1829 to 1847, a handful of important letters and diary extracts by her friends and family illuminate the writer's correspondence. This volume covers the period from her childhood up to the publication and review of Jane Eyre.

About the Author
Margaret Smith is a renowned Bronte scholar, textual editor of the Clarendon edition of Charlotte Bronte's novels (General editor, Ian Jack), and co-editor with ian Jack of the three volumes. For OUP she is the co-editor of the following works of Charlotte Bronte: Jane Eyre (1969, rev. 1975),
and editor of Jane Eyre in the OENS series (1973, into WC in 1975); Shirley (1979, into WC in 1981); Villette (1984, into WC in 1990); The Professor (1987, into WC in 1991). Co-editor of Anne Bronte's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1992), and of Robert Browning's The Poetical Works (Vols 1and2, 1983,
Vol. 4, 1991).
