The "Via Media" (middle way) represents a dialogue between the Evangelical Anglican, Anglo-Catholic, and Roman Catholic. Based on the edition of 1889 (with obvious errors and misprints slightly corrected), this is the first fully annotated volume of Newman's Anglican works. The text is supplemented with an introduction and appendices listing all the variant readings between the three editions of 1836, 1837, and the final edition. In addition, Weidner sets the original pagination of 1889 in the margin alongside the present text for quick reference to the uniform edition of the collected works.

'All of these essays contribute something towards an informed reading of Newman's work.' T.R. Wright, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, Literature & Theology, December 1992 'a splendid contribution to Newman studies ... the best tribute to what Manning angrily called Newman's 'old Anglican, patristic, literary Oxford tone transplanted into the Church'' John Kent, Expository Times `The appearence of a critical edition of the "Lectures" under the title of the third edition, "The Via Media of the Anglican Church", is to be warmly welcomed. It is good to have this important work available and accessible.' Journal of Theological Studies 'scholarly ... will be indispensable for all students of Newman's thought and theology ... scrupulously edited' Times Literary Supplement
