9780198520207: Charge Exchange and the Theory of Ion-Atom Collisions (International Series of Monographs on Physics)

During the last two decades, the theory of ion-atom collisions, and particularly of charge-exchange reactions, has advanced rapidly to the point where existing texts are no longer suitable as an introduction to the subject. This book aims to remedy the situation by providing an account of modern theoretical methods used to study the interaction of positive ions with atoms (or ions), concentrating particularly on charge-exchange reactions. These reactions cannot be studied in isolation, and it is necessary to consider to some extent, the whole range of ion-atom collisions leading to elastic scattering, excitation, and ionization. The material is presented at a level suitable for beginning research students and is self-contained, but assumes a knowledge of undergraduate quantum mechanics and atomic physics. It will also be useful for experimentalists who wish to assess the status of theoretical treatments of those collision processes in which they are interested.

About the Author:

B. H. Bransden is at University of Durham. M.R.C. McDowell was at University of London.

Review:

"Particularly welcome. . . . vast amount of new material. . . a useful and coherent textbook which should appeal to both graduate students and experts in the field. It will probably set the standard for the next 20 years." --Contemporary Psychology

"This authoritative new text expounds the theory for the full range of collision velocities. Students will welcome the careful and systematic treatment of a subject which becomes complicated in detail. . . . generous inclusion of diagrams to illustrate comparisons. No doubt the book will be a standard reference on charge transfer theory for many years to come. . . . a valuable place in every university library." --Journal of Chemical Society, Faraday Trans.

"Timely. Both authors are well known authorities. A particular strength . . . is the fine explanation of the physical ideas motivating the coordinate systems used in theoretical models. Another strong point is the comprehensive discussion of the various systems of coupled equations. Also valuable is the detailed treatment of boundary conditions in Coulomb scattering. . . . a valuable addition to the libraries of theorists active in heavy particle and electron scattering in atomic and molecular physics." --Physics Today
