9780198540250: The Ecology of Butterflies in Britain (Oxford Science Publications)

This new book offers a full-scale treatment of British butterfly ecology. We have not had a comparable source-book for many years, and now it comes at a time when many butterfly populations worldwide, including about half the British species, are in decline. The authors bring together facts and figures from recent studies to discuss individual butterfly behavior and adaptations; population dynamics, community structure, distributions, and habitats; and the underlying genetics and evolutionary pathways. The last chapter focuses on conservation. Information is presented in considerable detail, and the volume includes an extensive glossary, full bibliography, many tables, appendices on hostplants and habitats, and more than ninety figures. In addition to lepidopterists, students of ecology and natural history will find this volume an invaluable reference tool and benchmark in ecological studies. The authors are well known for their work in research, conservation, and education. They are: Roger Dennis, Tim Shreeve, Keith Porter, Martin Warren, Paul Brakefield, Jeremy Thomas, and Caroline Steel. Derek Whitely prepared the figures.

Review:

'offers for the first time a full-scale treatment of the ecology ... of British butterflies ... so far as I know, no country can boast of offering a similar treatment of ecological aspects of native butterflies. I am sure that this book would deserve the title "butterfly book of the year" if
such were to be given. Indeed, this is probably the best book on butterfly ecology ever published ... excellent book.'
Otakar Kudrna, Oedippus, No. 6, 1993

'a serious and comprehensive treatment of butterfly ecology ... this is a well-produced and valuable contribution to our knowledge of butterfly ecology. It will be an invaluable reference tool and, in many respects, a benchmark in ecological studies.'
Entomologist's Record, Vol. 105, 1993

'As yet, there is no other reference work that is comparable'
lf Eitschberger, Atalanta, July 1993

this book is to be highly recommended'
lf Eitschberger, Atalanta, July 1993

'an up-to-data coverage of butterfly ecology with special reference to British species'
Michael Hochberg, Acta Oecologica, Vol. 14, No. 2, 1993

'a valuable book which I hope will do much to stimulate future research'
Ian Rippey, Irish Naturalists Journal, January 1994

'a milestone in entomological literature ... the book is very readable, in an academic style, replete with tables, graphs, diagrams, and excellent black and white illustrations. This is a book which is difficult to put down ... he rounds off the book with a masterly overview of the
conservation of British Butterflies ... a source of useful information that might not be found elsewhere, and it will therefore always serve as a key reference work ... a fine book, highly recommended.'
John Feltwell, Antenna 18 (1) 1994

'If you are interested in the finer details of butterflies, then this book is a must!'
Richard Sutcliffe, Glasgow Naturalist, 22.4, February 1994
