9780198541950: Principles of Cellular and Molecular Immunology

This textbook provides a thorough introduction to modern cellular and molecular immunology for undergraduate science students and for clinicians. Johnathan Austyn and Kathryn Wood have adopted the novel approach of arranging the book around a map of the immune system, with each chapter focusing on a different aspect. This has allowed them to present the information in a logical order, drawing together diverse threads to illustrate the emerging principles of the subject. The book first follows the fate of antigens through different cellular compartments until they are expressed on the surface of antigen presenting cells and are recognized by T-cells, then analyzes the cellular and molecular basis of each of the components of the immune response in turn, and discusses immune regulation. It ends with an appendix that illustrates the techniques used in immunological research. In this way, the book builds up a sophisticated and fascinating picture of this complex and often confusing subject, explaining current concepts and indicating topics for debate. The result is a book that will be used by postgraduate students in immunology and related disciplines who need an overview of the subject, and by researchers who need a thorough insight into the whole subject to allow them to place their experimental results into a wider context.

Review:

'large, clear, well-drafted diagrams that make the most of only two colours ... the text is fresh, robust and often charged with a discerning enthusiasm ... The order in which the subjects are tackled is certainly not conventional, and the excellent decision to put the major histocompatibility
complex (MHC) at the front of the book has allowed the rest of the text to emerge with a balanced but individual flavour. Principles of Cellular and Molecular Immunology offers an entry-level guide to the subject and a basis from which to tackle current research. The book is a fine achievement and I
hope that there will be future editions to keep pace with the remarkable rate at which the subject is being untangled. It is a good book for dipping into and I will certainly use it for reference and will be happy to recommend it to students.'

'This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to immunology ... It is a credit to the authors that the majority of the references that they cite were published in the past three years and, in consequence, the text is fresh, robust and often charged with a discerning enthusiasm ... the

'Textbooks of immunology tend to be either too enormous and detailed or too small and superficial. This book has grabbed the middle ground and the authors seem to have found the right balance. A major strength are the illustrations which are quite superb and thoughtful. There is an excellent
appendix on cellular and molecular techniques. This book will be cherished by students of immunology, clinicians and research workers in immunology and related areas.'
A.B. Kay, Clinical and Experimental Allergy, 1994, Volume 24

'The literature on immunology increases at a frightening rate and it is very good to have this up to date book. The information is verly clearly presented with good diagrams and tables. The reader will find this a very enjoyable, informative and interesting book.'
Gen. Pharmac. Vol. 25, No. 2

'Th reader will find this a very enjoyable, informative and interesting book.'
International Journal of Biochemistry, Vol. 26, No. 4, 1994

'This book deserves the interest of doctors and students of medicine and can be warmly recommended.'
Zentralblatt fur Pathologie, No. 39, V.6, 1993

'good textbooks both teach and enable the readr to learn ... Here, we find good ideas that allow the book to achieve this. Its approach reflects very much the way in which immunological research operates today ... I find the book to be of an admirably uniform level and style throughout;
authoritiative and thoughtful in places ... clear in explanation and not overly didactic ... the illustrations are clear and used sensibly to complement the text. What this book does deliver is very good in itself, and the authors deserve our admiration for their efforts in writing such a valuable
book ... its scholarly approach makes this a book to be recommended ... Anyone who teaches the subject will find this book a very useful and accessible source. Highly recommended.'
Norman A. Staines, King's College, TIBS 19 - June 1994

'All immunologists like books. When they are not reading them they seem to be writing new ones, in a relentless struggle to profess and explain the subject they adore. This places great demands on authors to create novel and fascinating ways of proselytising a fast-moving body of knowledge and
understanding. The authors of this book have achieved just this. It is an excellent volume for use by undergraduates and Master's degree students as well. The price, L25 for the paperback, is very sensible for a text that should be bought and used.'
D.J. Rogers, Br J Biomed Sci 1994

'with an excellent and comprehensive introduction followed by specific chapters dealing with a number of individual topics in a fairly broad sense but also including details in boxes'
Cell Biology International, Vol. 18, No. 3, 1994

'This excellent book introduces basic and recent key concepts in a manner that can be understood by undergraduated science students, clinicians, and post-graduated research students in Immunology. Therefore, it is recommended to all who are receiving their introduction to the fascinating field
of basic Immunology.'
Mythes Toledo Barros, Disciplina de Alergia e Imunopatologia do Hospital das Clinicas, Rev. Inst. Med. trop. Sao Paulo 36 (3) 224, May/June 1994
