9780198542872: Genes V.

The purpose of this book is to account for the structure and function of genes in terms of extensive knowledge about both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It explains what a gene is, how it is reproduced and what controls its expression. This new edition has completely new chapters on protein trafficking and eukaryotic gene transcription. It has a new introduction to the subject, making the book more approachable to less advanced students. Chapters on bacterial transcriptions, post-transcriptional control, interrupted gene structure, RNA splicing, transposons in bacteria, transposable elements in eukaryotes, gene expression in development, and the role of oncogenes in carcinogenesis have been completely rewritten.

`Lewin provides an invaluable framework for a basic understanding of the eukaryotic gene and its cis and trans controlling elements... It demands, and deserves, to be read chapter by chapter... Get rid of Genes III. Go and buy Genes IV.' TIBS

`this book is impressively succinct, comprehensive, current and authoritative' Oxford Medical School Gazette

'extremely easy to read ... The diagrams are excellent and very helpful to the reader. I found the book a most rewarding read and would recommend it to undergraduates and scientists alike who want an up-to-date overview of how genes function.' John Coote, Society for General Microbiology Quarterly, November 1990

'a comprehensive summary of our current knowledge in Gene Expression ... well written and well illustrated' Professor Bernard Perbal, Universite VI, Paris, Methods in Molecular and Cellular Biology

'The expanded and updated fourth edition represents the current generation of an outstanding lineage. Lewin continues to meet the increasingly difficult challenge of providing a comprehensive review of a most rapidly developing area of contemporary science. This fine work should justifiably find its place on the bookshelves of many virologists.' Olen Kew, Virus Research, 20 (1991)

'Genes IV is not only an updated edition of the excellent molecular biology book by Benjamin Lewin, edge of gene expression ... The book is well written and well illustrated, as were the previous volumes in the series.' Methods in Molecular and Cellular Biology
