Book Description Oxford University Press, London, 1981. Slip-Case. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 21st. VG in NF slipcase. This is the 2 volume set of the OED that was reproduced micrographically. The size of the volumes and the weight of the pages have caused them to pull towards the bottom, giving the top of the spine a slight concave look. The binding is blue cloth and in very good condition. The matching slipcase is in near fine condition, the plastic tabs that help to pull the books out of the slipcase are a little tattered but still functional and the drawer for the magnifying glass (included) is in great shape and includes the original box (within the drawer) for the magnifying glass. Volume I is A-O and Volume II is P-Z with supplement and biography. Because of the size and weight, this book will require extra shipping. Slip-Case pages. Bookseller Inventory # 6875

It embraces not only the standard language of literature and conversation, whether current at the moment, or obsolete, or archaic, but also the main technical vocabulary, and a large measure of dialectical usage and slang. Its basis is a collection of some five millions of excerpts from English literature of every period amassed by an army of voluntary readers and the editorial staff. Such a collection of evidence--it is represented by a selection of 1,800,000 quotations actually printed--could form the only possible foundation for the historical treatment of every word and idiom which is the raison d'être of the work." ; VG,VG.
