"The Compact Edition of the Dictionary Of National Biography (D.N.B.) includes the complete and unaltered texts of the 22 volumes of the main D.N.B. and of the six volumes which make up the twentieth-century D.N.B. the opportunity has been taken to simplify the process of looking up a biography ? by the rearrangement of the twentieth-century D.N.B. into a single alphabetical sequence, and by the provision of a single index to the entire work." Volume 1 has a presentation inscription, volume 2 has the previous owner's bookplate; slip-case is rubbed at edges, and front of drawer for glass (glass missing) is torn at corners. Nonetheless, this set has had minimal use, with the slip-case taking the shelf-wear; apart from the shortcomings as described, a very good set of the DNB in this useful format.
