This book analyses the key skills that a lawyer needs to handle a case effectively, a topic that is not covered coherently in any other book. At a time of rapid and wide-ranging change in the delivery of legal services, the current edition involves a complete reworking of the last edition of the book to take into account the implications of the implementation of the Jackson Review, and to see effective litigation clearly in the context of concerns about funding, case management by the court, costs, and the growing use of alternative dispute resolution.
The book has a strong focus on the needs of the legal practitioner, the decisions to be taken at each stage of a case, and the criteria to apply in making those decisions. This is all securely based in references to relevant Civil Procedure Rules and decided cases, with checklists and commentary to assist in the project management of a case.
The book also focuses on the skills a lawyer needs to work effectively. This includes skills in dealing with a client, drafting legal documents, and presenting a case in court. Susan Blake, Director of Studies and Associate Dean, Inns of Court School of Law

Susan Blake, Associate Dean of The City Law School, City University London. Susan Blake spent several years in practice at the Bar dealing with a variety of types of case in all levels of courts. She was formerly Course Director of the Bar Vocational Course at the Inns of Court School of Law, having played a major part in devising and implementing the BVC. She became Director of Studies in 1998, and is now also Programme Director for the LLM in Civil Litigation and Dispute Resolution that was introduced in 2011. This Master's course fits quite closely with the coverage of this book, as it focuses on effective legal practice, and current issues in legal practice.

Susan is also a co-author of "A Practical Approach to Alternative Dispute Resolution (3rd edition 2014), and of "The Jackson ADR Handbook" (2013) which was published in connection with the implementation of proposals resulting from The Jackson review of Costs. Both books are published by Oxford University Press.
