Grade 1-4 These 102 poems are loosely grouped by subjects of interest to children, such as monsters, family life, animals, etc. Unlike many anthologies, the collection highlights the works of contemporary poets, many of whom are British. As a result, it contains a great many Briticisms such as chips, pud, queue and treacle , and several of the rhymes rely upon British pronunciation for their effect. These two factors may make these poems inaccessible to very young children. While some of the poems are image-filled, insightful and humorous, others are trite and less than careful in use of rhythm. But, as in the other collections in this series, there is a sense of vigor, a sense that poetry is alive and well, reinforced by the abundant color and black-and-white illustrations. This is a useful anthology for any library where poetry is loved and shared. Librarians should be forewarned, however, that the title is misleading. Mother Goose anthologies and Bennett and Oxenbury's Tiny Tim (Delacorte, 1982) are "very first" poetry books. These poems are for primary-grade children.
