9780199738625: Philosophy of Science Matters: The Philosophy of Peter Achinstein

In this, the first book devoted to Peter Achinstein's influential work in philosophy of science, twenty distinguished philosophers, including four Lakatos award winners, address various aspects of Achinstein's influential views on the nature of scientific evidence, scientific explanation, and scientific realism. It includes short essays by Steve Gimbel and Jeff Maynes, Nancy Cartwright, Jordi Cat, Victor DiFate, Jerry Doppelt, Adam Goldstein, Philip Kitcher, Fred Kronz, Deborah Mayo, Greg Morgan, Helen Longino, John Norton, Michael Ruse, Bas van Fraassen, Stathis Psillos, Larry Laudan, Richard Richards, Kent Staley, and Jim Woodward with replies to each contributor from Peter Achinstein. Readers will come away with an understanding of the current debate in multiple areas of philosophy of science and how various contemporary issues are connected.

About the Author:

Gregory J. Morgan (PhD, Johns Hopkins) is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Stevens Institute of Technology. He specializes in History and Philosophy of Science and Applied Ethics and has published in British Journal for Philosophy of Science, Journal of Molecular Biology, Biology and Philosophy, Journal of History of Biology, and Isis among others.

Review:

"This volume of essays related to the work of Peter Achinstein is overdue, and philosophers of science will benefit from its clarification of the many issues Achinstein has raised for the discipline." --Jarrett Leplin, Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews

"Peter Achinstein's career in the philosophy of science tracks a half century of changes in the philosophy of science from latter days of Logical Positivism through the historicist turn to the naturalism of much contemporary thought. At each of its inflection points Achinstein has made important interventions that have shaped its trajectory. This volume brings together papers by an overlapping set of his most important fellow contributors and former students that celebrate, interpret, and assess Peter Achinstein's distinctive contributions to the discipline that owes so much to his thought." -- Alex Rosenberg, The R. Taylor Cole Professor of Philosophy, Duke University

"These essays each follow Achinstein's example of careful, historically informed philosophy of science; historians interested in such issues will certainly profit." -- Isis: A Journal of the History of Science Society
