9780199746910: Ten Lessons in Introductory Sociology

Designed to introduce students to key concepts and methods in sociology and to engage them in critical thinking, Ten Lessons in Introductory Sociology provides a brief and valuable overview to four major questions that guide the discipline:

* Why sociology?
* What unites us?
* What divides us?
* How do societies change?

Deftly balancing breadth and depth, the book makes the study of sociology accessible, relevant, and meaningful. Contextualizing the most important issues, Ten Lessons helps students discover "the sociological imagination" and what it means to be part of an engaged public discourse.

Review:

"Ten Lessons in Introductory Sociology, Second Edition, is adaptable to the ways in which most people teach introductory sociology. It is well written, not trite, and easy to adapt to existing repertoires."--David Brown, Illinois State University

"Every topic covered is appropriate for the course, and provides wonderful insight into areas that are not usually covered by other books. This book exposes readers to other parts of the world where there have been struggles and connects them sociologically with the events in a known environment, like the United States of America."--Theodore Ekechukwu, Austin Peay State University

"I really like the book's coverage and organization. It is organized logically and focuses on the big, important sociological issues without getting bogged down in too many specific details. I would highly recommend this text to colleagues."--Kimberly E. Fox, Bridgewater State University

"This brief book is more focused and less dry than standard introductory textbooks and should promote reflexive and analytical thought more successfully than traditional texts."--Daniel Kreutzer, Metropolitan State University
