9780199989331: The Scientific Revolution in Global Perspective

In The Scientific Revolution in Global Perspective, William Burns places the Scientific Revolution--and its causes and effects--in a global context. Rather than taking a Eurocentric position, Burns fully reimagines the emergence of modern science on a global scale. Written in a clear, direct style and rich with examples, the book fluidly integrates the history of the Scientific Revolution into the story of world history in a convincing and seamless fashion. Based on cutting-edge scholarship, it reveals the wider motivations and global connections of scientific innovation and provides students with a new appreciation for the origins of the global, technological world around them.

About the Author:

William E. Burns is a historian who lives in the Washington, D.C. area with interests in the early modern world and the history of science. He is the author of several books, including Science in World History (2011), Science and Technology in Colonial America (2005), Science in the Enlightenment: An Encyclopedia (2003), and The Scientific Revolution: An Encyclopedia (2001).

Review:

"The Scientific Revolution in Global Perspective is a clearly written text, rich with examples, that broadens the social context of the development of early modern western science. It places the major currents of the Scientific Revolution within the larger world of European trade and expansion and the use of new knowledge. In so doing, it reveals the wider motivations and global connections of scientific innovation."--William Kimler, North Carolina State University

"The Scientific Revolution in Global Perspective is a cutting-edge history of science that adopts an impressively broad scope, both geographically and historiographically. The book fills an unexploited niche and draws on innovative scholarship in the process."--Andrew Keitt, University of Alabama at Birmingham

"The integration of the global context is both convincing and seamless, creating an inviting narrative from which students will gain new perspective on the history of science and, in doing so, a new appreciation for the origins of the global, technological world around them."--Brian Jeffrey Maxson, East Tennessee State University
