Synopsis

This text is based on standards in the AMATYC Crossroads document. The first in a three-book series, this text presents mathematical concepts and skills through relevant activities derived from real-life situations. These activities are meaningful because they illustrate how mathematics arises naturally from real-world situations and problems. Prealgebra Problem Solving is based on the assumption that you learn mathematics best by deriving concepts themselves in a meaningful context. Therefore, the text takes a collaborative approach to learning. Take an active role in your own learning by working in groups, thereby developing communication skills, a sense of independence, and a "can-do" attitude about mathematics. Technology is integrated throughout the book as appropriate so that you learn to interpret real-life data numerically and symbolically. Though the book is driven by the activities, there is a significant amount of practice of skill-based content through the many "Skills Checks," "What Have I Learned?" and "How Can I Practice?" exercises.
