For an undergraduate introductory level course in the humanities.

Humanities narrated in a story-telling approach.

The Humanities: Culture, Continuity & Change helps students see context and make connections across the humanities by tying together the entire cultural experience through a narrative storytelling approach. Written around Henry Sayre’s belief that students learn best by remembering stories rather than memorizing facts, it captures the voices that have shaped and influenced human thinking and creativity throughout our history.

This Books á la Carte Edition is an unbound, three-hole punched, loose-leaf version of the textbook and provides students the opportunity to personalize their book by incorporating their own notes and taking online the portion of the book they need to class — all at a fraction of the bound book price.

About the Author:

Henry M. Sayre is Distinguished Professor of Art History at Oregon State University-Cascades Campus in Bend, Oregon. He earned his Ph.D. in American Literature from the University of Washington. He is producer and creator of the 10-part television series, A World of Art: Works in Progress, aired on PBS in the fall of 1997; and author of seven books, including A World of Art, The Visual Text of William Carlos Williams, The Object of Performance: The American Avante-Garde since 1970; and an art history book for children, Cave Paintings to Picasso.

Review:

“The second edition is highly organized and more thorough in its storytelling and depiction of the historical context.”

- Andrew Zimmerer, Waubonsee Community College

“I like the Thinking Ahead and Thinking Back questions, the Closer Look sections, the Continuity & Change essays, and the primary sources. I think these are very useful in helping students identify important issues, and think critically about the material they are learning.”

-  Victoria Grieve, Utah State University

“Sayre has provided the best humanities text on the market.  His writing voice comes across as if he is conversing with the students, telling them fascinating stories about the cultures and their arts... Many of my students tell me after they have finished the course that this is one book they keep.”

- Jennifer Rosti, Roanoke College
