See Context and Make Connections across the Humanities
Discovering the Humanities helps students see context and make connections across the humanities by tying together the entire cultural experience through a narrative storytelling approach. Written around Henry Sayre’s belief that students learn best by remembering stories rather than memorizing facts, it captures the voices that have shaped and influenced human thinking and creativity throughout our history.
With a stronger focus on critical thinking, and coupled with the new MyArtsLab to personalize learning for each student, the second edition enables students to deepen their understanding of how cultures influence one another. It also shows how ideas are exchanged and evolve over time, and how this collective process has led us to where we stand today.

Henry M. Sayre is Distinguished Professor of Art History at Oregon State University-Cascades Campus in Bend, Oregon. He earned his Ph.D. in American Literature from the University of Washington. He is producer and creator of the 10-part television series, A World of Art: Works in Progress, aired on PBS in the fall of 1997; and author of seven books, including A World of Art, The Visual Text of William Carlos Williams, The Object of Performance: The American Avante-Garde since 1970; and an art history book for children, Cave Paintings to Picasso.Review:
Paul Beaudoin of Fitchburg State University - An extraordinary text with exquisite graphics and a concise and accurate, text. It engages the student in many areas of the Humanities and opens the door for further exploration.
Katherine Harrell of South Florida Community College - A cohesive introduction to the subject, with great images and information on related issues.
Terre Burton of Dixie State College of Utah - Intelligently written. I like the way connections are made between periods and between cultures.... I've liked using it. The layout is beautiful. I like the large illustrations and the opening quotes, the definition of terms, the excellent reproductions, the use of primary sources and the thoughtful approach.
Frederick Smith of Florida Gateway College - The text includes the vast majority of major periods, styles, and representative figures. I am especially pleased with its inclusion of non-Western material, which is critical in today's global environment. In addition, the textbook is beautifully illustrated and well-written.
Sandi Landis of St. Johns River Community College - Sayre's "Discovering the Humanities" is a highly readable text that introduces students to the pleasures of the field. His insightful discussions of individual works in the visual arts and literature show students how the same ideas are manifested in different genres in a given time period as well as how those ideas continue to influence us today. The text is ideal for an introductory level humanities course.
