The Classroom Mathematics Inventory, (CMI) is an informal assessment for use in evaluating students understanding and ability across the range of the elementary mathematics curriculum.
Similar to an informal reading inventory, the CMI is an informal classroom assessment tool meant to spark conversations between teacher and student regarding the student's understanding, skills, and attitudes. Using the scripted protocols and included manipulatives, the CMI aids teachers in determining students' performance across the strands of mathematics including: number; extended work with number; algebra; geometry; measurement; and data analysis, statistics, and probability. Additionally, protocols address students' attitudes and mathematical dispositions, as well as their mathematical processes such as problem solving.

Assess students' performance, attitudes, and abilities across the range of elementary mathematical skills with this informal assessment tool!
Designed to spark conversations between teachers and students, Guillaume's Classroom Mathematics Inventory for Grades K-6: An Informal Assessment, 1/e (CMI) is an effective means of evaluating students' conceptual understanding, computational proficiency, and problem-solving abilities. It may also be used to assess mathematical attitudes and dispositions.
For preservice and inservice teachers alike!
The CMI is fully standards-based, helping teachers measure student performance aligned with NCTM standards, as well as standards set by a number of states. The CMI helps preservice teachers forge the link between assessment and instruction as they determine students' current progress and use results to plan instruction. It also provides research results in mathematics achievement to help classroom teachers understand how other students in the nation fare related to the content presented in each chapter.
