Book Description Archon Books, Hamden, CT, 1972. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. X, 245 pages, plates, map, cloth, DJ, very good. Foreword by Major General Sir Edward Spears. From the dust jacket: On 7 May 1918, there appeared in the leading daily London newspapers a letter from General Sir Frederick Maurice accusing the Prime Minister, Mr. Lloyd George, of knowingly giving the House of Commons incorrect information about the fighting strength of the army. He considered this a deliberate attempt by the government to evade responsibility for the serious military setbacks of March and April of that year, and to shift the blame on to the soldiers. This, he claimed, was having a serious effect on the morale of the army. General Maurice, who had just relinquished the post of Director of Military Operations and was on leave, thereby ruined his career and raised the curtain on the opening scenes of the famous Maurice Debate. ~ Of the ruthless efficiency with which Lloyd George conducted his defence there can be no doubt. Of the ethics of his behaviour the reader must judge for himself. Major-General Sir Edward Spears, who knew Maurice well, and at that time was Head of the British Military Mission in Paris, has provided an appreciation. The diary and papers of Maurcie have been edited by his daughter who has written the linking narrative. In addition, she throws much new light on the sinister and hitherto unsatisfactorily explained mystery of "The Burnt Paper".
