Grade 5-8-- Sherburne's account of his service in the colonial navy and as a privateer during the American Revolution contains enough action and drama to hold the attention of readers. First-person narratives are not the norm for historical nonfiction for children, making this a unique alternative. Zeinert's introduction provides a useful overview of the workings of both the American and British navies of the period. An additional note describes the steps taken in editing Sherburne's writings. A brief timeline gives further context for the narrative. Unfamiliar words appear in italics when first used, and are then defined in a glossary (although some terms used in the definitions may be equally unfamiliar to young readers). An afterword tells readers what happened to Sherburne in later life, and a note suggests (mostly adult) titles for further reading. Two useful maps and a number of forgettable drawings accompany the text. A taste of history for those interested in the era, and a good read-aloud choice. --Elaine Fort Weischedel, Turner Free Library, Randolph, MA
