From the The book is a documentary history of the conductor's art-in part a music treatise and in part a social commentary. At the root of the author's thinking lies the conviction that the "great performance"-with its "unforgettable" qualities, which defy the art and science of recording, and which are treasured only in the innermost recesses of the mind-is by nature ephemeral, and that, paradoxically, this is its most enduring quality. It is the means by which conductors achieve their "great performances" and the significance of their achievements that David Wooldridge analyzes and describes with such provocative panache. Copious music examples support the text, in which Mr. Wooldridge maintains a delicate sense of balance in his descriptive writing and in his treatment of the technical aspects of his material. This book is not intended for the music scholar alone (although there is much in it that he will find valuable and interesting), but it is mainly a work for musicians and all who interest themselves in music.
